Dude! Wheres my (next) JOB In this great job-seeker economy, how come it is so hard for me to find a job? Did it go to immigrants? Not according to this article. I thought I heard that companies were having such a hard time finding workers so how come I keep going to network meetings and see the same highly skilled, articulate and educated talent month after month? Where did the jobs go? Dont let the numbers fool you. Low unemployment does not mean that it is a breeze to find your next job. And what about that stat from the federal government about how many new jobs were created this month? I doubt that 300,000 new jobs means 300,000 new well paying, great jobs that I am interested in. So whats a guy to do? Ive learned something over the last few months of an intense job search stick to the basics. When I started my job search in January I spent about 50 60 hours a week on the Internet finding and applying to jobs. After attending a two day workshop I learned that instead of spending 100% of my time on job boards I should have spent 15% of my time on job boards. The other 85% was for something else you should know what that is by now (it rhymes with metworking)! Make sure that you dont drown yourself in what seems to be a very busy, productive day. When I ended the day with a target number of applications sent in, I felt productive. But It was far from productive all of that work got me about a 2% return that is, only 2% of the jobs I applied for asked me in for an interview! Not very productive! Some of the basics include developing a job search strategy (with goals and some kind of accountability), getting a coach, and developing relationships with others (aka networking). Learn how to network effectively! Dont fool yourself these basics are not a bandaid fix they are things that you should be doing until you retire! And since you are selling yourself (which is a lifelong pursuit) you might want to check out How to Become a Rainmaker by Jeffrey Fox (check out his cool logo). It is a great little book (you can read it in a couple of hours) that will teach you some cool sales techniques and tactics to help you sell yourself. Your job is somewhere but you need to do the right things to find it. All of my previous jobs Ive had have come from people I knew aka networking. I didnt realize it at the time but I had been tapped into the hidden job market. It worked for me and it is much better to be tapped into an opportunity than after it is posted online. Yuck. Anything from community service, to nonprofit work, to nursing could be a perfect fit for you. However, if youâre also interested in the human condition, then there is one particular calling that might really appeal to you: counseling. Counselors are people trained in providing guidance to others for personal, social, or psychological problems â" anything from discussing confidence at work to suffering from serious post-traumatic stress disorder could be a topic of discussion for counselors. Of course, there is also far more nuance to exactly what a counselor does on a day-to-day basis and what is required for their training. You may be wondering if counseling is the right calling for you, so letâs go over some of the most essential aspects of the counseling profession and careers in counseling. Training and Requirements for Counselors Counseling is a fairly wide field that encompasses many different forms of the profession. Some counselors will have training within nursing and healthcare, while others might only need training in social work and the social sciences. Psychiatric nurses, especially, are required to first receive their Registered Nurse (RN) license and a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) before taking the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX). With the addition of clinic hours and specialized training in psychiatry, RNs can work to become psychiatric nurses after completing all the necessary steps. Of course, states have different expectations for healthcare professionals, so some states may not require completion of all these steps. RNs may work within psychiatric nursing without the additional training â" although most professionals prefer the pay increase and experience that comes with added training. In all, RNs with a focus on psychiatry and mental health counselors are in high demand, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Because of this, post-secondary schools that focus on nursing and counseling will become more frequent and, in turn, more competitive. If youâre interested in pursuing an education in nursing or counseling, be sure to check with your local state-run Board of Nursing to ensure you will be receiving the proper required education and licensing in order to practice in your state. Careers in Specialty Counseling Besides mental health, behavioral, substance abuse, and psychiatric counseling, there are also more specialized forms of the practice. These typically revolve around a particular demographic, as some counselors can relate directly to that population or have more experience in issues that affect them. One example is working with the elderly population â" either through assisted living care, grief counseling, or end-of-life care. Even those in hospice or palliative care require mental healthcare counseling alongside their physical care, and with the help of counselors, terminal patients can often find the peace they need before they die. Another specialty in counseling may be working alongside those in the LGBTQIA+ community, as many members of this community struggle with mental health issues that are often originate due to oppressive societal expectations or standards. In fact, according to a 2012 study from UCLA, about 40 percent of homeless youths in America are LGBTQIA+, as many of these young individuals have been estranged from their family and lack a support system that could adequately shelter them. Through their experiences, many teens may be lacking in adequate healthcare, and as a counselor that specializes in LGBTQIA+ issues, you may be able to work directly with this population and provide guidance and the tools needed to develop healthy coping mechanisms to combat mental illness. Of course, there are also other callings within counseling that are less focused on mental illness and more focused on guidance. Guidance counselors are one specialty that work within schools to help students find their purpose, decide on a postsecondary school, or work through personal problems that the student may have with teachers or classmates. There are also marriage counselors that help couples and career counselors that help adults make career decisions. If youâre curious what counseling with specific groups may be like, you can always seek out local volunteer opportunities to work one-on-one with those demographics. Whether youâre volunteering at an assisted care living facility or with a local homeless shelter, thereâs nothing like hands-on experience to help you better understand the stories and situations of others. Change your Perspective to Find a Career You Love Our History of Choices Many of my clients face challenges in their job searches. For example, they may be looking for a job that is less in demand than the supply applying for the position. They may be considered over-qualified for a particular position but not qualified enough for a position one step up. This can wear on an individual during their job search. Our History of Choices One client of mine was holding onto a career option that he felt did not leverage the skills he really wanted to use, share his dearest values, or match his interests. Yet, this was a viable career path for him. Even though he knew he did not want to pursue it, he still wanted to consider it an option. He told me it was his âleast-worst option. Many of us have been there in our lives, choosing the least-worst option. Remember when you had to quickly buy a car to replace your old one? You couldnt afford any of the ones you wanted and had to select the âleast-worstâ car. Did you ever vote for a political candidate because she/he was the âleast-worstâ of all the candidates? What about when you bought concert tickets only a few days before the show and had to choose seats that were the least-worst location? Changing Our Perspective Sometimes there doesnt seem to be another choice. However, in the course of your career, do you really want to seek out the least-worst option? Sometimes it might feel like we have little choice in the matter but, while we cannot control external factors, we can control our outlook and viewpoint towards our career. My client decided to change his perspective on this new career option. Instead of framing the next step in his career as finding the least-worst option, he was going to identify his âbest-goodâ career option. We concluded by setting his course of action to include: Identify careers that were a good fit based on his skills, interests, personality and values Layer in the job market demands Eliminate options based on his personal, external limitations Those external limitations eliminated a few of his good options but, ultimately, he identified two paths that fit within his external constraints. The options werent his dream job, but they were the best options of many good choices. Sometimes the first step in our job search is re-framing what we are looking for in a career and our approach to finding our career path.
